President of the University of Massachusetts, 1992-1995

Hooker” style=“width:250px; border:1px solid #111; padding:5px;” /></a></div></html> Michael K. Hooker was born on August 24, 1945, the only child of a coal miner in southwest Virginia. He graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. from the University of North Carolina in philosophy in 1969 and went on to earn M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1972 and 73, respectively. From 1973-75, he was assistant professor in the department of philosophy at Harvard University and then moved on to a similar position at Johns Hopkins University from 1975-1977. From 1977-78, he was assistant dean of undergraduate and graduate Studies, and from 1978-80 associate dean of undergraduate and graduate Studies, and from 1980-82, he served as dean. From 1982-86, he held the position of president at Bennington College in Vermont, and from 1986-92 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

In 1992, he became the president of the University of Massachusetts, from which position he resigned in 1995 to become chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
