Antoine du Pinet (d. 1584) condensed the work of the botanist P. A. Mattioli to produce one of the earliest pocket herbals. Arranged alphabetically, each plant is illustrated in woodcut and described briefly in five languages, including information on where the plant can be found, and what its "qualities" were. Appropriately for a book intended to be used in the field, the copy in SCUA is heavily annotated in a near-contemporary hand.
