The Antient Bee-Master’s Farewell is Keys' follow-up to his Practical Bee Master, written at the time of his presumed retirement. Keys claims the work as the culmination of his career in beekeeping, stating that in producing a book practical in nature, he will provide only the necessary background on the natural history of bees.
Keys defends the need for an entirely new book by describing his refined bee management system as wholly new. His attempt at a complete bee management text is bolstered by claiming to include the useful discoveries of fellow apiarists such as Butler, Mills, Reaumur, Rusden, Thorley, Thomas Wildman, Daniel Wildman, and Warder, among others. He is equally interested, however, in commenting on the works of rivals such as James Bonner.
