Loren Baritz served as Chancellor for several months in 1982, prior to the arrival of Joseph Duffey. During that time, he established the Office of Human Relations and wrote a new strategic plan which included the improvement of affirmative action policies.

Baritz came to Amherst in 1980 to serve as provost. Earlier, he had held administrative positions at the State University of New York and the New York Institute for the Humanities.

A historian, Baritz has written about the Vietnam war and its roots in American culture.
