During the first quarter century or more of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, prior to the extensive departmentalization, a number of faculty members held the title of Professor of Natural History. The first, the protistologist Henry James Clark, was appointed in 1872, but succumbed to tuberculosis barely a year later.
