Design and construction
The Mullins Center has been a lively presence since its opening preview on January 31, 1993. The Center is the site of UMass basketball and hockey, and it serves as a public skating rink, a concert hall, and a center for other ceremonial occasions, not only for the University, but for the whole Pioneer Valley.
This brick building is sensitively designed to avoid a bulky appearance, and is enhanced by a low-slung metallic roof. The public skating rink is a separate, yet integrated, structure. Distinctive red and white light standards anchor the north and south facades of the main structure, and even such mundane featues as downspouts are well integrated into the overall design.
Naming of the building
The complex was named for William D. Mullins, a former state representative and sports enthusiast.
