Charmaine Wijeyesinghe has studied, consulted, and written in the area of social justice education and organizational change for almost 40 years. She earned her bachelor’s in psychology (’80), a master’s in education (’85) and her EdD (’92) from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass), and while a grad student worked as an administrator at UMass, including serving as Staff Associate to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Assistant Dean of Students, and Assistant University Ombudsperson. After defending her dissertation she became Dean of Student at Mount Holyoke College, and later turned to career as a consultant. She was National Program Consultant for the National Conference for Community and Justice, where she developed social justice programs and trainings, and is now an independent consultant and author who addresses the areas of organizational development, identity development, and social justice, working primarily with colleges and universities around the country. Her doctoral work on Multiracial adults, completed in 1992, yielded one of the first models of Multiracial identity development which was adopted into the anti-bias curriculum of the Anti Defamation League. Dr. Wijeyesinghe has published articles, book chapters, and edited multiple volumes on Multiracial identity, racial identity and conflict resolution practice, the evolution of social identity models, and intersectionality. Wijeyesinghe received the (inaugural) NCORE Award for Scholarship in 2017 and (with Johnston-Guerrero) the Multiracial Network of ACPA’s Innovation Award in 2021. She was inducted into the ACPA Diamond Honoree Program in 2024.

The Charmaine Wijeyesinghe Papers document two branches of Wijeyesinghe’s scholarly and public engagements in the fields of social identity, Multiracial issues, and the application of intersectionality to higher education. Wijeyesinghe’s work and output related to her doctoral degree and 1992 dissertation, Towards a Theory of Bi-Racial Identity Development: A Review of the Literature on Black Identity Development, White Identity Development, and Bi-Racial Identity Issues, are well documented, including coded transcripts from interviews and Wijeyesinghe’s work log. Wijeyesinghe’s extensive engagement at professional conferences and as a workshop trainer frames the remaining materials, which include training workbooks and presentation agendas, programs, and handouts.

Born in 1963, Feuchtenberger was raised in East Berlin, where she trained as a graphic artist at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee. Shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall, motivated by the East German citizens’ movement, she co-founded the political artists’ collective PGH Gluhende Zukunft—a group that ironically called itself the “Glowing Future Productive Collective.” In her comics, theater and political posters, and other works, Feuchtenberger blends different artistic traditions, including German Expressionism. Her work frequently reflects her feminist activism by focusing on the relationship between women and their children and society. Since 1997, she has taught drawing and media illustration at the Academy of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, Germany.  

The works included in this collection were part of the first major solo exhibition of Feuchtenberger in the U.S. curated by UMass MFA student Bibiana Medkova and on display at the Olver Design Building in 2018. The collection itself was donated by German Filmmaker Jörg Foth. Both Foth and Feuchtenberger were active in the art scene at the time of German reunification and their work occasionally overlapped. For example, Feuchtenberger created film posters as well as art for the opening titles, closing credits, and intertitles for Foth’s 1994 film, Tir na nOg. The works in this collection reflect Feuchtenberger’s printing oeuvre for theaters, plays, and films during the 1990-2000s with a focus on works in color, and including a selection of black and white drawings and political artwork of the post-Berlin-Wall pre-unified Germany era.

An alumnus of both the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Boston College, Victor Aronow was involved with the anti-draft and anti-war movement during the Vietnam War, and the movement against U.S. involvement in Central America. Aronow was also involved with socialist, anarchist, and other leftist movements and organizations. Some of these organizations include the United States Socialist Labor Party, the Peace and Freedom Party, and the New America Movement. Most of his activism was focused in Massachusetts, but he also engaged with organizations that offered support to Central American movements in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Aronow practiced law, serving as defense counsel for Arthur Montour also called Kakwirakeron in U.S. vs. Kakwirakeron, as well as a member of the Wounded Knee Legal Defense team.

Aronow’s collection consists of a series of subject files containing magazines, books, leaflets, correspondence, clippings, newspapers, and fliers from a range of national and international leftist organizations. Aronow was a member of The Boston Draft Resistance Group, Newton Draft Counseling Center, and the American Friends Service Committee. As a member, Aronow collected files from these groups including correspondence, publications, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, and his personal notes. While practicing law, Aronow gathered court records for cases he worked on, including both his work as a member of the Wounded Knee Legal Defense team, where he worked defending the rights of the Oglala Sioux tribe members who were involved in the attempted liberation of Wounded Knee in 1973, as well as a member of the defense counsel in U.S. vs. Kakwirakeron in 1990. The collection contains files gathered from multiple trials related to Wounded Knee including correspondence between lawyers and defendants, court records and legal filings, newsletters, press releases, funding appeals, and fliers.

Tim Hammond Genital Autonomy Advocacy Collection

Tim Hammond’s pioneering contributions to the genital autonomy movement began in 1989 with the co-founding of the National Organization of Restoring Men and includes founding NOHARMM, producing “Whose Body, Whose Rights?”, publishing two large scale circumcision harm documentation surveys and a survey of 1,800 foreskin restorers, webmaster for the Global Survey of Circumcision Harm, co-founding the Children’s Health & Human Rights Partnership/Canada. Hammond is an Honorary Member of the Brussels Collaboration on Bodily Integrity and is honored to be the first Board president of the Genital Autonomy Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Vast collection of materials documenting the movement for genital autonomy including published works, interviews, photographs, videos, banners, shirts, and organizational records from American Academy of Pediatrics, Children’s Health & Human Rights Partnership, Amnesty International, Attorneys for the Rights of the Child, Bloodstained Men, and International Council on Genital Autonomy among others. Rob Okun is a progressive social activist, writer, and editor who has worked for equality between men and women for over 50 years. Following his awakening to the preponderance of men in leadership roles throughout the anti-Vietnam War movement, he became interested in feminism, masculinity, and gender inequality. He began to work towards promoting healthy ideas of masculinity and challenging harmful stereotypes about men through his work with Steven Botkin and the Men’s Resource Center (MRC), which was founded by Botkin in Amherst, Mass in 1982. Okun was the editor of Voice Male, the newsletter of the MRC, and also served as Executive Director. Following Voice Male’s transition to an independent magazine, he remained its editor. In addition to his work with the MRC and Voice Male, he edited the book Voice Male – The Untold Story of the Profeminist Men’s Movement which was released in 2017 and has written op-eds and commentaries in newspapers and on websites. His writing is syndicated by Peace Voice and has appeared in The San Diego Union Tribune, The Daily Hampshire Gazette, Boston Globe, Albany Times Union, Alternet, Ms., Counterpunch, Women’s eNews and more.

In addition to his work with the MRC and Voice Male, Okun served as Director of the nearly decade-long traveling art exhibition, book, and documentary film project known as Unknown Secrets – Art & the Rosenberg Era. The project dealt with the origins of the Cold War through the story of the arrest, trial, and execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. The Rosenbergs were convicted of conspiring to pass atom bomb secrets to the Soviet Union and were both electrocuted in June of 1953. The tragedy was examined in the exhibit via the images and words of dozens of artists such as Picasso, Sue Coe, Arthur Miller, David Wojnarowicz, Adrienne Rich, and many others. Okun coordinated showings of the exhibit, fundraised, was the editor of the book about the exhibit, and was a co-producer/director of a 30 minute documentary film, produced by Green Mountain Post Films. A Zoom celebration of Rob’s career at the Men’s Resource Center and as editor of Voice Male magazine was held in January of 2024 and is available via You Tube.

Okun’s papers document his extensive efforts related to the Rosenberg era art exhibit through correspondence with galleries, project members, universities, donors, artists, advisory board members, and funding agencies, as well as grant proposals, posters, photographs, drafts, clippings, press releases, pamphlets, and more. The collection also includes copies of the Rosenberg anthology.

Okun’s work with the Men’s Resource Center and Voice Male is represented through clippings, correspondence, photographs, pamphlets, writings, drafts, and more. Copies of the magazine—from its newsletter days up through its redesign as a four-color magazine, and copies of the Voice Male anthology—are also part of the collection.

Locations include a children’s isolation ward, Jersey Stock Farm, Bordon Robertson’s farm, cold storage building, Bordon Robertson’s house, Baldwin Apple Blossoms Charlie Fosters (Corrs Reservoir), Oakdale Brook, Otis Davis house, Oakdale in West Boylston, Hadley Furniture Company Building in downtown Worcester, MA, and the Fogg Library in South Weymouth, MA.

The photos were discovered by the parents of Stuart Barlow in 1960 upon the acquisition of their home outside of Worcester. The photographer’s are unknown.

Oates, Stephen B.

Stephen Baery Oates was born on January 5, 1936, in Pampa Texas, and earned a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a member of the UMass Amherst History Department from 1968 to 1997, when he retired. He authored consequential, award-winning biographies of major 19th and 20th century figures among his seventeen books on American history. As Paul Murray Kendall Professor of Biography, Dr. Oates held one of the first academic chairs in biography in the country. His many awards and honors include a Guggenheim Fellow, Christopher Award, Barondess/Lincoln Award, and a Distinguished Teaching Award from UMass among many others. Dr. Oates was a popular guest lecturer at colleges, universities, societies, and associations throughout the country, and made numerous appearances on radio and television, most notable in Ken Burns’ epic PBS documentary The Civil War. He consulted on projects for various commercial and university presses, as well as for the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Oates was a member of the Society of American Historians, American Antiquarian Society, and Phi Beta Kappa. He died on August 20, 2021.

The papers of Stephen B. Oates document his career as a biographer and faculty member at UMass Amherst. Materials include research notes, correspondence, articles, drafts and proofs of publications, lectures and address, fellowship and grant applications, book reviews, teaching and course notes, awards and photographs.

Anne Wiley

Anne Wiley, a lifelong feminist, taught women’s studies and psychology at Greenfield Community College (GCC) for over 40 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from LeMoyne College in Syracuse New York in June 1971, her MA in education at the State University of New York in 1975, and her PhD in education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1993. From 1977 to 2013 she was a full time Gender and Women’s Studies and Psychology professor at GCC. She strove to make the curriculum more inclusive and received several grants in order to fund projects to this end such as GCC’s Women’s Resource Center and the Gender and Women’s Studies program. She also coordinated the Women’s Reentry Program for three years and helped organize the New England Women’s Studies Conference. She was also an adjunct professor at Keene State College. She has published many articles in feminist publications and the journal Women’s Studies Quarterly and was a member of the board and president of the New England Learning Center for Women in Transition (NWLCWIT). When she retired from full-time teaching in 2013, she was given the title of Professor Emerita and the Anne M. Wiley Gender and Social Justice Scholarship was set up in her honor. She continued to teach following her retirement and won awards for her online psychology course.

This collection is centered around the professional life of Anne Wiley as a women’s studies professor at Greenfield Community College from 1976 to 2014. This includes summaries of department meetings and conferences for women’s studies, event descriptions and flyers, some course information, administrative material related to Wiley career such as resumes and sabbatical requests, and reports on programs designed to change GCC’s curriculum. It also includes material collection by Wiley related to her interest in women’s issues. It is organized into three series: Programs and Events, Publications and Clippings, and Academics.

Sylvia Helen Forman (1944 or 1945-1992) was an anthropologist and educator at the University of California – Berkeley and at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst focusing primarily on the demography, genealogy, and health outcomes of Quechua and Spanish-speaking Indigenous and Mestizo peoples in the Andean regions of Ecuador. She received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1972 for her study of law and conflict in rural highland Ecuador and the following year she joined the faculty at UMass Amherst. Soon after, she began to teach at UMass Amherst until her death in 1992 at only 48 years old. Forman’s legacy at UMass exists today through her former students, her substantial research, and her contributions to the Department of Anthropology, namely its Junior Year Writing program and the Sylvia Forman Third World scholarship fund (which was initially funded by a $100,000 grant from her estate).

Throughout the entirety of her life and her career, Forman was passionately dedicated to feminist and other social justice causes in the United States, in Ecuador, and elsewhere. From early in her career, she stood out as an advocate for her students and was instrumental in building cross-connections among anthropologists in the Five Colleges Consortium to expand opportunities for study, and she also forged strong connections with academics in the developing programs in Women’s Studies. She would later be recognized posthumously as one the founders of the Association for Feminist Anthropology in 1998.

Sylvia Helen Forman’s work in Ecuador can generally be split into two periods, the first of which corresponds roughly to 1966-1975, and the second from around 1976-1981, but she continued to work with contacts in the region long after. The former period saw more direct involvement and travel in Andean Ecuador, while the latter saw fewer trips and less extensive fieldwork. Regardless, both periods focused on similar topics of demography, genealogy, and medical experiences. Forman also did continue to travel to the region after these main research periods, but fewer materials are available from after 1981. Each series in this collection contains different parts of Forman’s work in Ecuador, her professional life, her personal life, and an array of pamphlets, postcards, and other ephemera she collected along the way. The majority of the content available is research-related and typically consists of field notes, data, diaries, and journals.

In 1993, UMass Educational Television was created by Dean Bailey Jackson and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Jay Carey to establish a creative media outreach project for the School of Education. Professor Liane Brandon was asked to be the Director with Associate Dean Jay Carey as Co-director. Working in collaboration with staff member Scott Perry, they designed UMass Educational Television to provide the public with innovative, original, educational programming using the resources of the School of Education and the University, and to serve as a hands-on learning laboratory for students and teachers. They became the only School of Education in the country to produce original educational programming for cable/home audiences. Despite the positive reception of the programs produced, funding for the UMass Educational Television was cut and production ceased in 2003.

The UMass Educational Television Collection consists of many of the original programs they developed and created: Try This At Home, Fresh Ink, Who Knows? Pet Tales, Valley Vignettes, Hi Mom!, and Fine Print. Show flyers, posters, production files, and awards provide insight into the creation and reception of programs.
