Theodore W. (Ted) Allen Papers

1890-2017 (Bulk: 1940-2005)
47 boxes (64 linear feet)
Call no.: MS 1021

Theodore W. "Ted" Allen (1919-2005) was an anti-white supremacist, working class intellectual and activist who researched and wrote outside of the academic community for almost seventy years. He developed his pioneering class struggle-based analysis of "white skin privilege" beginning in the mid-1960s; authored the seminal two-volume "The Invention of the White Race" in the 1990s; and in his writings and speaking consistently maintained that the struggle against white supremacy was central to efforts at radical social change in the United States. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Allen grew up in Paintsville, Kentucky and Huntington, West Virginia where he was "proletarianized" by the Great Depression. After hurting his back in the mines, he moved to New York City and taught at the Jefferson School of Social Science, did research with the Labor Research Association, and worked various jobs including factory work, teaching, the post office, and the Brooklyn Public Library. In the 1960s, after breaking from the Communist Party, Allen set out on his own independent research course, launching forty years of work that focused on white supremacism as the principal retardant of class consciousness among European-American workers and on the importance of the left and working class and progressive movements struggling against white supremacy.

The Theodore W. Allen Papers are a comprehensive assemblage of correspondence, published and unpublished writings, audio and video materials, books with important marginalia, and research by one of the major theorists on race and class of the twentieth century. The Papers also include poetry and correspondence by Allen's wife, Marie Strong Allen, a radical feminist poet, who died tragically in 1962. Overall the collection is a rich and unique body of materials on the Old and New Left and on the labor, Civil Rights, and Black Liberation movements and it will appeal to students, scholars, researchers, activists, and interested readers worldwide.

By Jeffrey Perry, with additions by Susan Creighton.

Theodore W. "Ted" Allen (1919-2005) was an anti-white supremacist, working class intellectual, and activist who researched and wrote outside of the academic community for almost seventy years.

He joined the American Federation of Musicians, worked in the coalmines, served as a United Mine Workers Union Local President, and joined the Communist Party. After hurting his back in the mines, he moved to New York City and lived his last fifty years in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. During those years, he taught at the Jefferson School of Social Science, did research with the Labor Research Association, and worked various jobs including factory work, teaching, the post office, and the Brooklyn Public Library. In the 1940s, he wrote probing analyses of conditions and struggles in the coal mining industry. In the 1950s, he wrote on radical political economy and produced critical analyses of U.S. capitalism, U.S. imperialism, and the Communist Party USA's analysis and program (which he thought was not radical enough), sometimes writing under the pseudonyms "Molly Pitcher" or "Milton Palmer."

In the 1960s, after breaking from the Communist Party, Allen set out on his own independent research course. He sought to address the question of "Why No Socialism in the United States?" and how to explain the relative lack of class-consciousness by U.S. workers as compared to workers in other capitalist countries (what was referred to as "American Exceptionalism"). Inspired by Black Reconstruction by W. E. B. Du Bois, he analyzed and wrote about the "white blindspot" and "white skin privilege" (in such articles as "White Blindspot" and "Can White Workers Radicals be Radicalized") and began forty years of work that focused on white supremacism as the principal retardant of class consciousness among European-American workers and on the importance of the left and working class and progressive movements struggling against white supremacy. Noel Ignatiev was a close collaborator during this time period, and the two of them corresponded frequently as well as reviewing each other's work and co-authoring articles.

In the early 1970s, while involving in many of the debates of the New Left, he began twenty-plus years of research in Virginia's colonial records and in probing analysis of Irish history as he developed an analysis that racial oppression was a form of ruling class social control not determined by phenotype or skin color. This research resulted first in the unpublished The Kernel and Meaning (drafts written between 1969 and 1976) that dealt with the development of white skin privilege, its relationship to land acquisition and use, and problems with U.S. historiography.

Next followed drafts of the unpublished book Peculiar Seed: The Plantation of Bondage (drafts written circa 1976) that addressed the subject of class struggle and the origin of racial slavery in continental Anglo-America.

Written between 1985 and 1997, Allen's exhaustively researched The Invention of the White Race was published in two volumes in 1994 (Vol. 1) and 1997 (Vol. 2), and republished in a two volume set in 2012. With its focus on racial oppression and social control, The Invention of the White Race is one of the twentieth-century's major contributions to historical understanding. Allen's major thesis -- that the "white race" was invented as a ruling class social control formation in response to labor solidarity as manifested in the latter (civil war) stages of Bacon's Rebellion (1676-77) was reinforced by two important corollaries: 1) that the ruling elite deliberately instituted a system of racial privileges to define and maintain the "white race" and to implement a system of racial oppression, and 2) that the consequence was not only ruinous to the interest of African Americans, it was also disastrous for European-American workers. In developing these theses Allen challenges the two main ideological props of white supremacy -- the notion that "racism" is innate, and it is therefore useless to struggle against it, and the argument that European-American workers benefit from "white race" privileges and that it is in their interest not to oppose them and not to oppose white supremacy.

Over his last thirty years, Allen wrote hundreds of published and unpublished articles and letters challenging white supremacy, capitalist rule, sexism, and U.S. Imperialism as well as numerous poems. In his last few years, he wrote an important philosophical piece "On the Individual and the Collective" and a major unpublished work, "Toward a Revolution in Labor History" (drafts written between 2002 and 2004).

Ted passed away early in 2005 from deteriorating health issues. His friends and colleagues hosted memorial services for him both in his home city of New York, and in Virginia near the site of Bacon's Rebellion.

Particularly significant in Allen's work is the full-scale challenge it presents to what he refers to as "The Great White Assumption" -- the unquestioning acceptance of the "white race" and "white" identity as skin color-based and natural attributes rather than as social and political constructions. His thesis on the origin, nature, and maintenance of the "white race" and his understanding that slavery in the Anglo-American plantation colonies was capitalist and enslaved Black laborers were proletarians, contains the basis of a radical approach to United States labor history.

Scope of collection

The Theodore W. (Ted) Allen collection documents the life and work of the historian and author of the groundbreaking book, The Invention of the White Race. The collection provides extensive records of the drafts of both volumes of The Invention, along with numerous drafts of other related works: The Kernel and Meaning, A Peculiar Seed, and Towards a Revolution in Labor History. Together with Allen's profuse research notes and background materials, his correspondence, and information on his social and political commitments, the collection is a major resource for study of the development of the concept of whiteness and white privilege in historical studies and for study of a working class white radical engaged in racial justice struggles.

Series descriptions

The correspondence series includes materials ranging from the 1950s through the end of Allen's life, and includes both personal and professional communication. It includes a number of letters and cards from family members, including nieces and nephews for whom he was a much-loved uncle. Allen was close to both the Ed Peeples family (including Ed's daughter Cecily) and the Remco van Capelleveen family. Correspondence with these friends includes letters, poems, wedding invitations, birth announcements and family news to and from Ted and those families over a number of years. There is also a large number of handwritten and email exchanges with Allen's professional friends and peers, including Peter Bohmer (his work focuses on economic social justice and protesting U.S. imperialism), Noel Ignatiev (his work focuses on race and social class, and the move to abolish "whiteness"), Ed Peeples (civil rights advocate, his work focuses on contemporary issues in social justice), Jeff Perry (his work focuses on the role of white supremacy in social change efforts), David Slavin (fellow labor activist, his work focuses on European political history and the "White abolitionist" movement), Remco van Capelleveen (his research focuses in part on Caribbean immigration to New York City), and Bill Vila (his work focuses on Puerto Rican culture and society). Allen was a frequent correspondent with publishers and with editors of various newspapers and journals, including The Guardian, the Journal of Southern History, The Nation, and the New York Times, among others.

The series is arranged in three sections:

Subseries A includes correspondence to or from Ted Allen, arranged alphabetically by the name of the person with whom Ted was corresponding. In some cases, Allen organized correspondence under a descriptive labels, reflecting his interests and associations. In the early 2000s, for example, a number of email exchanges take place between Allen and a group of friends and colleagues, with the emails sent to the group collectively. This correspondence has been labelled "Colleagues" and most often includes combinations of Sean Ahern, Peter Bohmer, Gene Bruskin, Anamaria Flores, Mike Hill, Greg Meyerson, Dennis O'Neil, Ed Peeples, Jeff Perry, Jon Scott, David Siar and David Slavin, though other names appear from time to time.

Allen's letters to editors are arranged together under the label "Editor," followed by the name of the newspaper or journal. A number of letters from Allen seeking funding for his research and writing are arranged together under the label "Funding," followed by the organization. Finally, correspondence with publishers is grouped together under the label "Publisher" followed by the name of the publishing house.

Subseries B includes correspondence to and from other writers regarding Allen, primarily (though not entirely) after his death. The letters are arranged alphabetically by the name of the writer. The "colleagues" (see above paragraph) also corresponded between themselves after Allen's death to plan his memorial service: their correspondence is included here.

Series 1C consists of other writings, correspondence and biographical material related to some of Allen's more voluminous correspondents, arranged alphabetically by the correspondent's name. These letters typically include background information on such notable colleagues such as Noel Ignatiev, Jeff Perry, or Ed Peeples.

Series 2 contains materials pertaining to Allen's prolific writing and speaking engagements as well as writing that references him and his work. The series is divided into four parts, each organized alphabetically:

Subseries A includes anything for which Allen is the author, or materials that otherwise pertain to his writing, such as applications for funding, efforts to fundraise to support his writing, etc. This series includes various drafts of The Kernel and the Meaning, Peculiar Seed: The Plantation of Bondage, The Invention of the White Race, Volumes 1 and 2, and Toward a Revolution in Labor History, as well as numerous shorter-form papers, essays, and articles.

Among these are numerous works on which Allen was listed as coauthor, most notably the trio of articles with Noel Ignatiev that were included in Can White Workers Radicals Be Radicalized? In the late 1980s, Michael Goldfield--a professional colleague of Allen's--wrote a paper entitled "The Color of Politics in the United States: White Supremacy as the Main Explanation for the Peculiarities of American Politics from Colonial Times to the Present." While Allen's work is cited throughout the paper, he felt that it was a clear case of plagiarism and corresponded with Goldfield, asking him to take action. Goldfield's paper, as well as correspondence between Allen and Goldfield are included in the collection.

Series B contains reviews of Allen's work by other writers.

Subseries C includes materials related to Allen's speaking engagements, including presentations at conferences, local workshops, and seminars. This includes his participation in the How Class Works conferences of 2002 and 2004.

Subseries D includes articles authored by others in which Allen or his work is mentioned or cited. In general, the series is arranged alphabetically by folder title within each of the four groupings (2A - 2D). However, to collocate various drafts of different works, some particular folder naming practices have been used:

The Kernel and Meaning: As with other works, there were numerous drafts of The Kernel and Meaning. Because the drafts are largely undated, it was not clear during processing of the collection what drafts precede others, or what chapters belong together as part of the same draft. Consequently, the Kernel and Meaning folders are labeled A-V, the letters indicating drafts that clearly belong together when that was known, and in many cases, are not full drafts. The letters do not imply any order to the drafts; they merely distinguish between those drafts that are known to belong together. One draft, entitled "Full Draft", includes a complete draft that was found together during processing.

Peculiar Seed: Numerous drafts of Allen's unpublished work, "Peculiar Seed: The Plantation of Bondage" were in the collection. While most duplicate drafts were discarded, any items with Allen's handwritten annotations were retained. For example, although Drafts A, D and E are identical, Drafts D and E have different annotations. Because few drafts had dates or version numbers, the processing staff labeled them as they were encountered. As a result, the labels "Draft A" and "Draft B" indicate that each is a coherent draft, but the labels do not imply anything about precedence.

The collection includes numerous drafts of Allen's massive The Invention of the White Race, and many of the drafts are dated. When possible, these are arranged in chronological order, with year listed followed by the number of the month in parentheses in an attempt to collocate drafts of the same date. The processors of the collection identified four distinct undated drafts, differentiated primarily by the typeface of the draft. These are labeled drafts A through D, with no order implied. Draft C is a typed draft that appears to be (with the exception of Ch. 13) an original typed copy, rather than a printed copy.

Toward a Revolution in Labor History This set of resources are labeled Part 1, 2 or 3, arranged alphabetically to collocate these drafts together. Within each Part, folders are then arranged chronologically. In many cases, there is additional information in parentheses after "Part XX" to provide more information about the contents of the folder.

Series 3, comprised of 17 boxes, contains materials generated in the course of Allen's background research on race, racism, and the history of the United States. It consists in large part of collections of articles, many annotated, although it also includes sets of handwritten notes and an extensive collection of individual notecards. Many of the notecards have bibliographic references.

This series is only partially processed and is organized roughly by research topic. Since Allen was relatively diligent about labeling many of his research folders, the original folders have simply filed been in the boxes, when applicable.

Series 4, comprised of 5 boxes, has a rich collection of material related to Allen's personal life. It is divided into three parts, each organized alphabetically:

Subseries A: Personal includes Allen's birth certificate, divorce papers, final will and testament, and family history. The collection includes papers and artifacts from Allen's early years working in the mines; note in particular his union card, several pay envelopes with the hours worked written on them, and a metal "check" used to check out a lamp when entering the mine. From his middle years, the series includes various curriculum vitae and resumes along with materials from his time at Goddard College as a graduate student. Note that he later served as a field faculty advisor for Charles Johnson, also a graduate student at Goddard College: this material is filed in Series 4B (Teaching).

The series also includes information from Allen's marriages, including an extensive collection of original poetry and notes from his wife, Marie (Strong) Allen, and her correspondence with two prominent poets: Sean O'Casey and Marianne Moore. Finally, the series also includes materials related to his memorial services at the Brooklyn Public Library and in Virginia, materials touching on family members, including his father's memoirs, records of his mother's achievement as a stenographer, and materials from his sister's funeral. Allen's brother Tom also appears to have been something of a writer, and the series includes several original essays of his, some with editorial comments from Ted.

1946/1990 (bulk1950/1958)

Subseries B: Teaching includes syllabi, course descriptions and planning and teaching notes from Allen's various teaching appointments. While there is some material from his time teaching at Goddard College and at Grace Church School, the bulk of this part of the series comes from his time teaching at the Jefferson School of Social Science in New York City. The most personal touch can be found in a set of evaluations of him written by his 7th grade math students (as well as their evaluations of themselves!). You may want to see also his autograph book signed by his various middle grades students with delightful messages to him (in Series 4A).

Subseries C contains materials related to his participation in the Sojourner Truth Organization, the Harper's Ferry Organization, and various other Marxist-Leninist organizations from his younger days through to his final days. This part of the series contains articles, booklets and newsletters, as well as full journal issues and complete newspapers of various M-L organizations.

The collection includes half a box of photos that were in Allen's possession. Some are of Ted throughout his life, including several professional photo portraits of him as a young man, a collection of school class pictures (with Allen's class picture as the teacher) during his time teaching at the Grace Church School, and various candid photos of him on his travels or with friends. He also has a number of photos of family members, mostly his parents, his siblings and their children and families. Lastly, he has a collection of photos sent to him by friends, comprised mostly of pictures of the children in the families of whom Ted was very fond.

The folders are labeled "Family," "Friends," "Ted" or "Unknown" followed by a further descriptive title, and arranged alphabetically. "Unknown" indicates either that the subjects of the photos are unidentified or that the relationship to Ted is unknown, even if the subject is identified.

The media, found in boxes 36-38, consist of a wide variety of formats: 1/4-inch tape, video cassette, cassette tapes, mini-cassettes, floppy disks, recordable DVDs and zip disks. The media have not yet been fully processed to identify the content.

1940-2016 (bulk1969-2005)

Ted Allen was a voracious reader. This final series consists of three different kinds of material that Ted read: 1) newspaper articles that he clipped and often annotated as well as those sent to him by others; 2) full issues of various newspapers including "The African World," "The City Sun," "Hatikvah: Brooklyn College Jewish Student Newspaper," "National Vanguard," "The Park Slope Paper," and "The Prospect Press"; and 3) articles that Ted collected or were sent to him by friends and colleagues. There has been some attempt to distinguish between those articles that he specifically used for research (found in Series 3), and these articles, although that distinction may be tenuous.

The clippings are organized chronologically by year. The newspapers are organized in their own box, and are organized alphabetically. The articles are organized alphabetically by category, but have not been further processed beyond a category assignment.
